English Requirements


To meet the English language demands of our VET courses, all students must satisfy the Institute that they have adequate English for the courses they undertake. As a general rule, this means that a student’s English language competency needs to be equivalent to IELTS Band Score 5.5 or higher.

As confirmation that his or her English level is equivalent to IELTS 5.5, the student must show evidence of having achieved one of the following:

  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 6 weeks of Certificate III in ESL (Further Study) at Upper Intermediate level at Universal Institute of Technology or another registered training organisation. The course needs to have been completed no more than one year prior to the student’s application for admission into UIT’s VET program. OR
  • Satisfactory completion of 6 – 10 weeks of Upper Intermediate level from a National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) Accredited English Institution. The course needs to have been completed no more than one year prior to the student’s application for admission into UIT’s VET program. OR
  • Formal evidence that the student has achieved an IELTS Band Score of 5.5 within two years of the student’s application for admission into UIT. OR
  • For students from countries in which English is the mother tongue, no formal English proficiency testing is generally required for direct entry into a VET course.
